Strabane Sigersons 1-8 Fintona Pearses 4-19
As the score line suggests this was a one sided affair as Fintona stormed to the Tyrone Junior B title with a convincing win over Strabane at a beautiful Killyclogher pitch on Sunday afternoon past. These two teams have been playing well in the Junior B league all season but on this occasion, the Fintona ladies totally outplayed and outclassed their Strabane counterparts with players such as Nichola Donnelly, Aisling Colgan and Nicola Quinn very much to the fore. Both sides exchanged early points with Fintona leading the way with a point from a free kick via Nichola Donnelly and Ciara McGill on target for Strabane. From this stage until around five minutes to the interval, Fintona completely took over and asserted their dominance on the game. Goals from Michaela Cunningham and Sinead Kelly interspersed with a host of points via Nichola Donnelly (2), Nicola Quinn (3) and Aisling Colgan (5) sent Fintona into a commanding lead and they even enjoyed the luxury of shooting a penalty wide and also saw Strabane goalkeeper Leona Houston pull off some fine saves to deny them further goals. Strabane rallied somewhat prior to the half-time break with Hollie Friel, Lorraine Conwell, Rachel Brennan and Michella Moss all firing over a point apiece. The second half started in whirlwind fashion for Fintona with Nicola Quinn finding the Strabane net with a well taken goal, she followed this up with a brace of points and Nichola Donnelly also weighed in with a point to effectively seal the game. Strabane didn’t get on the second half score sheet until twelve minutes from time with Michella Moss firing in a goal direct from a free kick and Rachel Brennan adding a point from play. Fintona were not to be outdone and a further brace of points from Nicola Quinn added to by three further points from the impressive Nichola Donnelly ensured a landslide victory for the Pearses with Rebecca Monaghan adding the icing to the cake with a last minute goal. Tori McLaughlin and Lorraine Conwell had points for Strabane prior to the late Fintona onslaught but it was purely cosmetic as the Junior B title deservedly went to the ladies of Fintona Pearses with the final whistle bringing scenes of joy at one end and bitter disappointment to the Strabane bench. This was a one sided final and try as they did Strabane just didn’t get going be it nerves or the big occasion getting to them but for Fintona it was simply an overall excellent display and they were deserving winners with an impressive hour of football. St Dympna’s edge extra time cracker St Dympna’s...............................................2-11 Cappagh.................................................... 0-15 (AET) St Dympna ladies clinched the Tyrone intermediate title at Greencastle after an absorbing tussle that went to extra time against gallant Cappagh, writes Damien Donnelly. The B senior final planned for the same night at the St Patrick’s venue involving Glenelly and Aodh Ruadh was postponed due to a bereavement in the Glenelly club, thus allowing for extra time in the A intermediate match. The teams were tied at 0-4 each over the interval, St Dympna’s starting half two well with an Orla O’Neill free plus and Tina Donnelly O’Neill combined for the first goal on 35 minutes. Cappagh replied via Teri McCusker, Aisling Porter and Clodagh Poyntz to close the gap to one midway into the half. Catherine McNabb pointed at the other end before Ciara McMahon engineered goal number two in the 47th minute. Back came Cappagh again for Porter, Megan Martin, McCusker, Poyntz and then a last minute Teri McCusker free taking the tie into extra time(2-6 to 0-12). Evenly matched scores in first period saw the teams move into the last 10 minutes level on 2-9 to 0-15. Orla O’Neill, however, edged the St Dympna’s ahead and Tina Donnelly scored what proved to be the last point of the match. St Macartan’s win thrilling contest St Macartan’s........................................................... 4-5 An Charraig Mhor.................................................... 2-7 St Macartan ladies recovered from a seven point deficit to deny An Charraig Mhor in the Tyrone senior championship decider at Beragh, writes Damien Donnelly. The St Colmcille girls of An Charraig Mhor looked to be in range of success when 2-3 to 1-3 ahead at half-time and then four further points after the restart placed seven points between the teams. Eilis Gormley and Gemma Begley goaled for Carmen in the opening half, Cathy Donnelly hitting a major in reply for St Macartan’s. Lynette McShane, Sinead McAleer, Etaoine O’Kane and Gemma Begley all posted points in the first ten minutes of the half to open up a seven-point cushion. St Macartan’s, though, conjured up a telling fight-back in the final twenty minutes or so as the match script altered dramatically. A Maura Kelly goal plus majors courtesy of Mary-Louise McGirr and Grainne Kelly, complemented by points from Cathy Donnelly and Joline Donnelly, supplied a 3-2 scoreboard surge that carried the holders to victory.
