Senior Championship
Sperrin Og Vs St Macartans (
Fri 8.30pm)
A youthful Sperrin Og side will aim to take out the first of the
“big guns” on Friday night as they pair off with St
Macartans. The Clogher Valley side are once again led by Monaghan
man Mickey Morgan, and with the acquisition of Sinead Mc Laughlin
and Orla O’Neill are an even more formidable outfit than
in previous seasons. They possess a wealth of talent, including
County stars Maura Kelly and Cathy Donnelly, each of whom have
a great depth of experience behind them. Sperrin Og’s fledgling
stars on the other hand have been forced to come to terms with
Senior football perhaps much sooner than they would have liked
due to the withdrawal of the services of a number of their more
experienced campaigners, such as the Tuoey sisters why are plying
their trade stateside. Macartans will feel that this could well
be the year that they manage to make that elusive breakthrough,
but first of all they must overcome the youthful enthusiasm of
a Sperrin Og side who will hold no fear as they prepare to enter
their first round tie as underdogs.
Carrickmore Vs Fr Rocks (Loughmacrory,
Sat 7.00pm)
High-flying Carrickmore currently sit top of the pile in Division
One following four comprehensive wins. The defending champions
are bidding for their fifth consecutive title, and ominously
for their rivals they actually appear better equipped this year
than in the past. Having tasted bitter defeat in the last two
Ulster Club finals, the Carmen girls will once again hope to
make a return to the provincial stage but will be well aware
that they must first negotiate their way through the potential
pitfalls of the Tyrone championship which they so nearly lost
last season. Fr Rocks on the other hand continue to struggle,
bottom of the Division One table without a point thus far. They
have some quality players such as Tyrone duo Martina Doyle and
Mairead Mc Guckian, and will certainly not lack character when
Saturdays clash gets underway. Carrickmore though, even with
their injury worries and absentees, should have enough to make
it safely through to the last four.
Errigal Ciaran Vs Kildress (Loughmacrory,
Sat 8.30pm)
The second game of the evening in Loughmacrory sees Errigal
and Kildress lock horns in what could be a truly intriguing
tussle. Errigal fell well short of the mark last year, and will
hope that this year can see a return to the sort of form which
saw them reach the Tyrone decider in 2003. Having dominated
at underage level for the past number of years, their squad
certainly has a depth and quality capable of competing at the
highest stage, as they showed with a comprehensive victory over
Trillick in their preliminary round meeting. However, a big
performance is required to see off what is sure to be a much
more formidable challenge from Kildress. Since returning to
Senior ranks, Kildress have certainly impressed and currently
occupy fourth spot in the table. They play a very attractive
brand of attacking football, and their passing game could cause
problems for the Errigal rearguard. This is set to be a cracking
tussle between two good footballing sides, and it could very
well take a second meeting to decide who progresses.
Aodh Ruadh Vs Aghyaran (Omagh, Sat 8.30pm)
The final tie of the round pairs Aodh Ruadh and Aghyaran together
in another interesting clash. Aodh Ruadh thus far have struggled
to reach anything close to the heights they have previously
enjoyed, as their lowly league position shows. With a lot of
younger players having been integrated to the senior ranks,
it was almost inevitable it would take time for the side to
find their feet, and where better than in the Championship to
do so. However this will be no easy task against a formidable
Aghyaran side, buoyed by the quality of their league performances
to date. Since winning the Intermediate title last season, Aghyaran
have gone from strength to strength and gave Aodh Ruadh more
than a scare in their league meeting. Despite this, Aodh Ruadh
are a hardened championship side who know how to grind out a
result, and are a team on a mission after last years Final disappointment.
Aodh Ruadh to progress, but it certainly wont be easy.
Intermediate Championship
Loughmacrory Vs Badoney ( , Fri 7.15pm)
The pairing of St Teresa’s and Badoney gets this years
Intermediate Championship action underway on Friday evening.
Badoney endured a slow start to their campaign, but have picked
up form in recent weeks and most recently enjoyed a comprehensive
win over Beragh last weekend. Briege Daly has returned from
injury and is the mainstay of the Badoney side, while sister
Katrina is also a focal point for many of their attacks. Loughmacrory
have turned in some decent performances to date, and will no
doubt fancy their chances against a side they have already defeated
in the league. Their young side is getting better each year
and will hope that this time around they can maintain the Intermediate
status they lost two years ago before bouncing back last season.
A draw could well be on the cards.
Galbally Vs Moy (Donaghmore, Sat 7.30)
A clash between the Junior championship winners of the past
two years, this time at Intermediate level. Galbally have had
a curious run of results so far, with two draws and two defeats.
On their day, with a full squad at their disposal, they could
be more than a match for anyone as they attempt to rediscover
even a glimmer of their previously glorious victories in Senior
level. Moy seem to be getting stronger with every game they
play, and are returning to almost full strength as they prepare
for their championship assault. Moy to progress.
Glenelly Vs St Endas (Urney, Fri 8.30pm)
Omagh St Endas have been given the ominous task of tackling
runaway favourites Glenelly in the opening round of games. Glenelly
are a team on a mission, and have romped clear at the top of
the table to leave everyone else playing catch-up. They host
a wealth of quality players in their ranks, and will be nothing
less than fully focused for the start of their championship
campaign. Omagh on the other hand are going through somewhat
of a transition at present, but will be hoping that their seniors
can emulate the great run enjoyed by their minors already this
season. Their cause has not been helped by a run of injuries
and absentees, but they will leave no stone unturned in their
search for what would be the shock of the competition.
Junior Championship
Mna na Deirge Vs Sigersons (Urney, Fri 7.15pm)
A local derby for the rights to a semi-final slot. Mna na Deirge
are growing stronger each year, and will be hoping that this
could be the year they finally enjoy some success. Sigersons
have enjoyed a profitable start to the campaign, and currently
sit third in the table. A closely contested encounter is in
store, with Sigersons having just too much firepower for their
neighbours.
Fintona Vs Pomeroy (Omagh, Sat 7.15)
This time last year Fintona were competing at Intermediate level,
and the Pearses will be hopeful that they can draw on these
experiences to see them through against a rapidly improving
Pomeroy side. Both sides have a point to prove, for differing
reasons, but the greater experience of Fintona should see them
through.
