NEW SPONSORS AND NEW CUPS
The Masterscreen cup was officially retired earlier this year with the first and most recent holders of the trophy An Charraig Mhor receiving the cup from the Tyrone county board. The Carrickmore club had the cup in their possession for     of its existence and it was a unanimous decision to had the cup to the club for safe keeping. Fitting then that with the announcement of Willie John Dolans sponsorship of the adult championships in Tyrone for this and the next two years the An Charraig Mhor and the Kerr family have handed over a brand new trophy for the senior football champions in the county.

Heraldic Grafts sponsor the new B Championship cup and coupled with Willie Johns support of adult competition Tyrone have been blessed in 2006.

The Aghyaran businessman who has been a major player in the mens game for many years is now, uniquely, the main sponsor of all adult football men and womens and hurling championships in the county. This is certainly not matched anywhere in the world of gaelic games. It is an honour for us to have Willie John as our championship sponsor. Speaking at the launch at the start of the Summer Willie John spoke of his “delight” at being involved with the ladies championship.

The counties senior football squad also received sponsorship from Strathroy Dairies and support from O’Neills while Straddle Service Station was the Minor sponsor for 2006.

CHAMPIONSHIP SNIPPETS

Galbally OC have of course tasted senior success in Tyrone. They claimed the second senior football championship in Tyrone in 1993 when they beat Carrickmore but were denied a two in a row when they fell to St Macartans the following year.

The Junior championship reached new heights this year, more clubs started out in the grade than ever before.

Beragh of course were the first winners of the Junior football championship in Tyrone in 1995

An Charraig Mhor have won the senior title nine times in fourteen years, they have however only missed two senior finals in that time in 1994 and 1998. They lost three finals in 1993, 1996 and 2000. Today marks there 13 th final and they will be trying to secure their sixth championship in a row.

In the carrickmore club Only three players,   Maura Groogan, Lynette Hughes and Alish Gormley have all nine senior championship medals .

Remarkably while their men enjoyed some great glory days in the senior championship, the Errigal Ciaran ladies have not fared so well. This will be their third final appearance having lost twice to todays opponents in 2003 and of course in 2005.

Carrickmore won the first Tyrone senior title in 1992, when they beat Omagh St Endas, they were indeed the first and last names on the Masterscreen Cup.

One of the Errigal management team must never be at home. Chris”Tiffy” Quinn is on the line today, but is also an underage coach at Errigal and senior manager of Omagh St Endas in Division One A. All that and he still finds time for work and the odd game of pool.

An Charraig Mhor Vs Errigal Ciaran

There is no doubting that with the quality within the Carrickmore squad though they will start favourites. They have suffered from players going to America and have had injury worries over several key personnel in recent weeks but have kept themselves busy and look sharp……no gimmicks just hard work was how a team mentor described the preparation.

If they needed any further motivation to make it ten titles and six in a row there are four. Firstly the winners on Saturday will take home with them the Jarleth Kerr Memorial Cup, the new impressive senior championship cup presented by the Kerr family of Carrickmore to the ladies county board.

Secondly and three more reasons Marie Groogan, Lynette Hughes and former county skipper Alish Gormley, all three have the full set of championship medals and would bound that collection up to ten.

All in all Saturdays senior final is one that many will have wanted and of course it could be a wee taster of a possible mens final later in the year, neither sides will be worries about that though. An Charraig Mhor are favourites but this is championship football
