MOY SECURE INTERMEDIATE TITLE
Moy 1-11
Fr Rocks Cookstown 1-10
Moy secured their first ever Intermediate Championship title on Saturday at Beragh via a single-point victory over Cookstown Fr Rocks, 1-11 to 1-10 the final score in a thrilling tussle.
Having trailed by 1-7 to 0-2 at the break Cookstown almost staged the comeback of all comebacks and it looked like they could snatch at least a draw from proceedings, but in the end fell just short as the Tommy Mc Garvey cup made its way to the Armagh border.
Caroline Kelly was the hero for Moy, registering a remarkable seven points, all from play, as she continued to run at the Fr Rocks defence
Centre-forward Leona Gallagher opened the scoring for Moy with a fisted point, before Cookstown took the lead through points from Jenny Harley and a Natasha Rushe free, the latter finishing the tie with five points. These were to prove to be Fr Rocks only scores of the first-half, as Moy took a grip.
Fr Rocks saw a player sin-binned, and straight away a powerful shot from Gallagher found the back of the net despite the best efforts of Cookstown ‘keeper Martina Glackin. Caroline Kelly fired over two quick points to open up a five point lead, before further points from Nina Murphy and Kelly again put the Moy firmly in control before the half-time break. Indeed, the game could have been over as a contest had Murphy not seen her excellent shot on goal rebound back off the post and wide.
It was left to Kelly once again to finish off the first half scoring with a well-taken point to leave it 1-7 to 02 at the break.
Fr Rocks came out with a different attitude and approach in the second half as they threw caution to the wind and pushed on with a conviction that they certainly lacked in the opening period.
Two points, one from centre-forward Carla Mc Garrity, set the ball rolling as Fr Rocks tried to claw their way back into this game. Kelly worked a free-kick short to point herself, before Rushe replied for Cookstown. Kelly was again on target soon after to make it 1-9 to 0-5.
Moy kept the pace , and Murphy pointed before a Rushe double left six points between the sides with 12 minutes to play. Leona Gallagher found herself in possession and space ahead of her as she bore down on the Fr Rocks goal, but with a major score looking like the only possible outcome, she was upended by Fr Rocks goalkeeper Glackin inside the large square, and referee Eileen Jones had no hesitation in pointing to the spot for a penalty.
Glackin could count herself as somewhat fortunate to still be on the field to face Nina Murphy’s spot kick, but the ‘keeper made amends by getting down to save smartly and turn the ball away for a ‘45’.
Soon after, Nina Murphy pointed a free to make it 1-10 to 0-8 and keep Moy’s noses in front with just minutes to play, but two points from Natasha Rushe and substitute Lisa Lennon left just three points between them to set up a grandstand finish.
Sarah Rafferty broke forward from midfield for an excellent Moy point, but Cookstown were not finished yet and they dug deep to pull the game out of the bag.
Deep in injury time a great ball in from Rushe was met by Laura Burton on the edge of the square, and the Fr Rocks attacker made no mistake as she fisted home to leave just a solitary point between the sides.
It was too little, too late for Fr Rocks as the full-time whistle was met by scenes of celebration from ecstatic Moy players, delighted by their first success in the Intermediate grade.
