COUNTY FINALS THIS WEEKEND
After the exit of Tyrone last Saturday at the hands of Dublin the focus in ladies football will now switch to Loughmacrory and Pomeroy this weekend for the three adult county finals and followers of Ladies football in Tyrone are in for a treat.
Starting on Friday at 6pm with the Junior championship and two of the counties more progressive clubs go head to head, CilIseal meet a well drilled Fintona in the final and this tie is too close to call.
Fintona had of course proved to strong for Mna Na Deirge, 3-12 to 4-2 the final score while Killeshill had just two points to spare over division three champions Cappagh, 2-8 to 2-6.
The final pairing then on Friday offers the Pearses a chance to bounce straight back to the Intermediate grade while for CillIseal it could prove a stepping stone on their way to the senior ranks that they have been striving for.
Referee for the 6pm Brenda Lougue memorial cup decider is the experienced Brendan Gallagher.
On Saturday afternoon then it’s the turn of the Intermediate and senior finals and what better way to wet the appetite for An Charraig Mhor Vs Errigal Ciaran in the senior tussle than Glennelly and Moy in the Intermediate final at 4pm.
The North Tyrone club marched into the final with some ease, casting off Beragh 3-7 to 0-8 on a night when Ann Dooher wasn’t in the squad, they had of course already seen of St Endas with style as well, determined no doubt to make amends for last years devastating defeat by Aghyaran.
Weaker teams would have been left shell shocked yet the steely determination of Glennelly will leave the Moy knowing what they are up against.
They too have been impressive this term and saw of a strong Loughmacrory side at the semi-final stage with Nina Murphys two first half goals easing them home 2-9 to 1-4.
After last years Junior championship success the Moy are certainly turning a few heads and they have the palyers to do a job this Saturday, Conroy, Lavery and Jordan players to watch this weekend. This tie is expected to be close with a kick of the ball between them.John McGlinn takes charge of this final at Plunkett Park
And so on to the senior tussle, two names synonymous with county titles at all grades yet its Errigal Ciarans second final appearance at the senior grade, their last in 2003 ending in defeat by this Saturdays rivals An Charraig Mhor bolstered by a plethora of inter county players.
A memorable win over Dungannon last year sets the Carmen girls on route to five in a row…..are they unstoppable? Well statistics would seem to point you that way yet Errigal have built up a good head of steam and beat last years finalists Dungannon by two points in the semi-final.
A long awaited breakthrough is very much Errigals aim and with the impressive Sarah Connolly firing on all cylanders (she hit nine points in that semi win) it could well be their year. All over the park they have shown quality Claire McCarvey at full forward, Full back Kelly Marie McCarvey and the returning to full fitness Selina Qguz, confidence is high, but it is An Charraig Mhor they have to beat.Impressive once again in the championship St Macartans bit the dust at the semi-final stage 3-13 to 1-5 the final score as Carrickmore turned in a second half blitz. They have ozzed quality in recent years and their more mature stars have not lost any of their ability, the mixture of youth and experience has moulded this team and the gelling of that process could become apparent on Saturday night.Begley, Gormley, O’Kane and McCann Carmen have the forwards to kill teams off. Errigal will have to be at their best.
Throw in time in the senior decider is 6-45pm with Eileen Jones the match official.
