TYRONE LADIES SENIOR FINAL
Fintona take Junior honours

The ladies of Fintona Pearses clinched the Brenda Logue Junior Championship title last Friday night with a 0-9 to 0-4 win over Kileeshil at Loughmacrory, and in doing so booked their ticket back to Intermediate football for next season.

In the end, the Pearses superior experience told as they pulled away in the second period to claim a historic win, holding their young counterparts to just a single point in the second half.

Kileeshil started the game with gusto, and took the lead with points from Deborah Magill and Kathleen Hegarty putting them two points ahead. Fintona though responded through Edel Garrity, who finished a great individual run with a fine point. Aislinn Colgan levelled matters with a converted free kick, before Garrity again found her range to put her side in front.

As the game swung from one end to the other, Orlagh Hamill converted a free kick for Kileeshil to level with the half time interval approaching. However, it was Fintona who were to go in ahead at the break as Tina Donnelly got forward for a well taken point to make it 0-4 to 0-3 in favour of Fintona as referee Brendan Gallagher brought the half to a close.

With both sides struggling to take their chances, it was Fintona who made an early impression on the second half scoring stakes, before Kileeshil responded through a Rhona Loughran free to leave just a point between them once more. At this point, it really was anyones game as play continued to flow from end to end.

However it was Fintona who stepped up a gear to hold their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the half, pulling away to open up a four point cushion themselves and building a lead which they refused to surrender.

Catherine Mc Nally got forward from the half back line to fire over a well-taken point, before veteran Karen Welsh converted two free kicks to extend her sides advantage. The final score came from the boot of Edel Garrity once again, whose fine score put five between the sides and ensured the Junior title for 2005 belonged to Fintona.

Jubilant scenes greeted the final whistle, as captain Edel Garrity accepted the Brenda Logue Memorial Cup on behalf of an ecstatic Fintona team.
