The WJ Dolan Tyrone ladies, senior, intermediate and junior football championships have reached the semi-final stages. This weekend will be filled with all the thrills and spills of championship fayre but whether upsets are on the cards in three days of competition remains to be seen.Starting this evening (Thursday) with the new B championship in senior competition Aodh Ruadh will face Trillick in what promises to be a keenly contested encounter, both sides of course exiting the main competition at the quarter final stage. On to Friday evening and it’s the first of the senior semi-finals, last years intermediate champions Glenelly will have it all to do as they face the impressive and strong Errigal Ciaran . Driven by exciting county full forward Sarah Connolly Errigal have to start as favourites to come out on top, but their opponents will not be overawed by the occasion and will feel they have the ability to turn over their illustrious opponents. Gortin plays host to the junior football semi-finals on Friday night as Galbally face Moortown and Fr Rocks play Sperrin Og , sadly venues have been hard to come by hence the fact of bringing two East Tyrone teams to the Gortin club for this last four tussle. Either side has the firepower to advance and Gortin could be the place to be for some exciting football action. Beragh is the venue on Saturday evening for a senior double header, in the B championship St Dympnas will meet Aghyaran at 6-15pm. While in the senior championship proper St Macartans take on the champions An Charraig Mhor.
Going for yet another title and aiming to be the first winners of the WJ Dolan championship as they were the first and last holders of the Masterscreen cup Carrickmore look hot favourites once again. They have lost the services of one or two players this term and of course Alish Gormley is still carrying an injury but its unlikely that Macartans will have the firepower to get over this hurdle.Saturday also sees a double header at Dunmoyle as the race for the Intermediate football championship hots up. The action opens with the ever improving Pomeroy up against Beragh who are developing as a quality young side and a side keen to make the breakthrough in this, the Red Knights centenary. Moy who eased past a poor Omagh in the first round will have a bigger challenge on their hands on Saturday as they take on Loughmacrory.
All in all a great weekend of football championship semi-finals are on the cards in Tyrone and the clubs involved have appealed to their supporters to come out in numbers and support the clubs taking part.
